Anytime! Most families book this visit in the 3rd trimester (28+ weeks) but it is never too soon to prepare.
-
See “Our Services” tab for more details. In summary a short physical exam for breastfeeding parent and baby is complete, breastfeeding is assessed, infant feeding is evaluated, weighted feed transfer is preformed, and infant weight/weight gain is calculated on a medical grade scale.
You will be provide individualized guidance to support effective feeding and comfort.
-
A weighted feed is a method used during a lactation visit to estimate how much milk a baby transfers during a breastfeeding session.
The baby is weighed immediately before and after feeding on a highly sensitive scale, wearing the same clothing and diaper both times. The difference in weight equals the approximate amount of milk consumed.
This helps assess milk transfer, feeding effectiveness, and whether the baby is getting enough milk at the breast.
-
Choosing an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) means working with the highest level of lactation expertise. IBCLCs complete extensive clinical hours (1,000+) for training, rigorous board certification, and ongoing education, allowing them to assess and manage complex feeding issues.
While other consultants such as CLCs can provide helpful basic support, IBCLCs trained and certified to handle more advanced challenges and collaborate with medical providers when needed.
